What are the two main types of analytical chemistry?

The two main types of analytical chemistry are:

  1. Qualitative analysis – finds out what substances are present.
    • Example: Testing if salt water has chloride ions.
  2. Quantitative analysis – finds out how much of a substance is present.
    • Example: Measuring how much calcium is in milk.

In short:

  • Qualitative = What is it?
  • Quantitative = How much is it?
