Where are main group elements located on the periodic table?

Main group elements are located in the s-block and p-block of the periodic table. Here’s how to visualize it:

  1. S-block:
    • On the left side of the periodic table.
    • Includes Group 1 (alkali metals) and Group 2 (alkaline earth metals).
  2. P-block:
    • On the right side of the periodic table, except for the noble gases which are at the far right.
    • Includes Groups 13 to 18 (boron group, carbon group, nitrogen group, oxygen group, halogens, and noble gases).
  3. Exclusion:
    • The d-block (transition metals) and f-block (lanthanides and actinides) are not part of the main group.

In simple terms:

  • Main group elements are mostly the leftmost and rightmost elements of the periodic table, leaving out the middle block of transition metals.
