How do aldehydes and ketones differ in structure?

  • Aldehydes: The C=O group is at the end of the chain, and it is attached to at least one hydrogen.
    Example: CH₃–CHO
  • Ketones: The C=O group is in the middle of the chain, and it is attached to two carbons.
    Example: CH₃–CO–CH₃

Difference:

  • End = Aldehyde
  • Middle = Ketone
