What is the difference between a voltaic and an electrolytic cell?

Here’s the difference.

  • Voltaic cell (Galvanic cell):
    • It produces electricity from a chemical reaction.
    • The reaction happens naturally (spontaneous).
    • Example: a battery.
  • Electrolytic cell:
    • It uses electricity to make a chemical reaction happen.
    • The reaction does not happen on its own (non-spontaneous).
    • Example: electroplating or electrolysis of water.
