What is forensic anthropology?

Forensic anthropology is a specialized field of anthropology that applies skeletal analysis and techniques in archaeology to solve criminal cases. Forensic anthropologists primarily work with human remains to determine information such as age, sex, ancestry, stature, and cause of death. They often assist in identifying individuals from skeletal remains in cases of homicide, mass disasters, war crimes, and unmarked graves.

Their work typically involves:

  • Skeletal Analysis – Examining bones to determine biological profiles (age, sex, height, ancestry).
  • Trauma Analysis – Identifying signs of injuries or diseases that may indicate cause or manner of death.
  • Taphonomy – Studying post-mortem changes in remains, including decomposition, animal scavenging, and environmental effects.
  • Facial Reconstruction – Assisting with facial approximation for identification.
  • Collaboration with Law Enforcement – Providing expert opinions in criminal investigations.

Forensic anthropologists often work alongside forensic pathologists, law enforcement, and medical examiners to analyze remains and contribute to solving cases.
