What is an endothermic reaction?

Here’s a simple explanation:

Endothermic Reaction:

  • A reaction that absorbs heat (or energy) from the surroundings.
  • Because energy is absorbed, the temperature of the surroundings decreases.
  • In terms of enthalpy, ΔH is positive.

Examples:

  • Photosynthesis in plants
  • Evaporation of water
  • Dissolving ammonium chloride in water

Key idea:

  • Energy flows into the system → surroundings get cooler.
