What are the types of gravimetric analysis?

Here’s a version of the types of gravimetric analysis:

1. Precipitation Method

  • Substance is turned into a solid.
  • Solid is filtered, dried, and weighed.

Example: Chloride measured as silver chloride (AgCl).

2. Volatilization Method

  • Substance is turned into a gas.
  • Weight of the gas or weight loss is measured.

Example: Finding water by heating a compound.

3. Electro-gravimetric Method

  • Substance is deposited on an electrode using electricity.
  • Weight of the deposited material shows the amount present.

Example: Measuring copper by depositing it on a platinum electrode.

4. Thermal (Gravimetric) Method

  • Sample is heated, and weight change is measured.
  • Shows decomposition or loss of gases.

Example: Decomposition of calcium oxalate to calcium oxide.

In short:

  • Precipitation → weigh solid
  • Volatilization → weigh gas or loss
  • Electro-gravimetric → weigh deposited metal
  • Thermal → weigh after heating
