What is the general formula for aldehydes?

The general formula for aldehydes is: R–CHO

  • R = an alkyl group (like CH₃, C₂H₅, etc.) or hydrogen.
  • CHO = the aldehyde group (–C=O with one hydrogen attached).

Example:

  • If R = H → HCHO (formaldehyde)
  • If R = CH₃ → CH₃CHO (acetaldehyde)
