What are the properties of solids, liquids, and gases?

Properties of Matter

1. Solids

  • Particles are close together and only vibrate.
  • Definite shape and volume.
  • Hard to compress.
  • Example: Ice, metal.

2. Liquids

  • Particles are close but can slide.
  • Definite volume, no fixed shape.
  • Slightly compressible.
  • Example: Water, oil.

3. Gases

  • Particles are far apart and move freely.
  • No definite shape or volume.
  • Easily compressible.
  • Example: Oxygen, steam.

In short:

  • Solid: fixed shape & volume
  • Liquid: fixed volume, shape changes
  • Gas: no fixed shape or volume
