When an acid reacts with a base, the reaction is called neutralization.
The products are:
- Salt (formed from the positive ion of the base and the negative ion of the acid)
- Water (H₂O)
Example:
- Hydrochloric acid (HCl) + Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) → Sodium chloride (NaCl, a salt) + Water (H₂O)
So in general:
Acid + Base → Salt + Water
This is why titrations are based on acid–base reactions — because the products are predictable and easy to detect.
