What are the products of an acid reacting with a base?

When an acid reacts with a base, the reaction is called neutralization.

The products are:

  • Salt (formed from the positive ion of the base and the negative ion of the acid)
  • Water (H₂O)

Example:

  • Hydrochloric acid (HCl) + Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) → Sodium chloride (NaCl, a salt) + Water (H₂O)

So in general:
Acid + Base → Salt + Water

This is why titrations are based on acid–base reactions — because the products are predictable and easy to detect.
