What is the difference between precision and accuracy?

Here’s a difference between precision and accuracy:

  1. Accuracy:
    • Accuracy tells you how close a measurement is to the true or actual value.
    • Example: If the true weight of an object is 50 g and your measurement reads 49.9 g, that measurement is accurate.
  2. Precision:
    • Precision tells you how close repeated measurements are to each other, regardless of whether they are correct.
    • Example: If you weigh the same object five times and get 48.2 g, 48.1 g, 48.3 g, 48.2 g, and 48.1 g, the measurements are precise but not accurate (since the true weight is 50 g).

Key point:

  • Accuracy = closeness to true value.
  • Precision = closeness of repeated measurements to each other.
