What is esterification?

Esterification is a chemical reaction in which an alcohol reacts with a carboxylic acid to produce an ester and water. This process usually takes place in the presence of an acid catalyst, such as concentrated sulfuric acid, and often requires heating. Esters formed in this reaction are well known for their pleasant, fruity fragrances and are widely used in perfumes, food flavorings, and solvents.
