How does a catalyst influence reaction rate?

A catalyst makes a reaction go faster without being used up itself.

  • It gives the reaction an easier path (with lower activation energy).
  • More particles can react because they don’t need as much energy.
  • The amount of product formed stays the same, but it is made more quickly.

In short: A catalyst speeds up a reaction by lowering the energy barrier, but it does not change the final balance (equilibrium).
