To convert grams to moles, you use the same idea of molar mass, but in reverse.
🔹 Steps to convert grams to moles:
- Find the molar mass of the substance.
– For an element, it’s the atomic mass in grams per mole.
– For a compound, add up the atomic masses of all atoms in the formula to get grams per mole. - Divide the given mass (in grams) by the molar mass.
– This tells you how many moles are present.
Example (conceptual, no equation):
Suppose you have 36 grams of water. Since the molar mass of water is about 18 g per mole, dividing 36 by 18 gives you 2 moles of water.
In short:
Grams ÷ Molar Mass = Moles.
